How to Find Yourself Again: The 4 Stages of Personal Transformation

How to Find Yourself Again: The 4 Stages of Personal Transformation

How to Find Yourself Again: The 4 Stages of Personal Transformation

Maybe nothing is technically wrong.

But something feels off.

You look at your life and think, “Is this it?”

Maybe you thought you would be further along by now. Maybe you have many of the things you once wanted, but they do not feel the way you imagined they would.

Or maybe you have changed so much that the life you created for an earlier version of yourself does not fit anymore.

If you have been wondering how to find yourself again, I want you to consider something:

Maybe you are not lost. Maybe you are transforming.

Personal transformation often begins in the middle of what looks like a perfectly acceptable life. The career. The marriage. The children. The house. The accomplishments. The responsibilities.

You checked all the boxes.

And then one day, you woke up and realized you had been living from somebody else’s blueprint.

I know this feeling because I have lived it.

I got married at 23. Had my first child at 26. My second at 28. Bought a house. Worked on my master’s degree. By the time I was 28, I had checked every box I thought I was supposed to check.

Then I woke up at 32 and thought, “Something feels off.”

That was not a midlife crisis.

It was a midlife awakening.

Today, I am divorced after 19 years of marriage. My children are in college. I run my business full time, I am building a new chapter in New Orleans, and I am in a loving relationship that feels very different from the relationship I had with myself in my younger years.

I also invested deeply in my own coaching journey. I started with free content, then joined a masterclass, a coaching program, one on one coaching, a conference, and eventually a business mastermind. Some of those decisions scared the hell out of me. I even called a friend for emotional support before completing one of those investments.

But I knew I could not keep asking my old life to hold my new self.

Over time, I began to understand that transformation has stages.

I call them the Transformation Journey:

Awakening.

Shedding.

Becoming.

Embodiment.

You may move through these stages in order. You may circle back. You may be awakening in your marriage, shedding at work, becoming in your friendships, and embodying freedom in the way you spend your time.

That is normal.

The goal is not to rush through the stages.

The goal is to recognize where you are and give yourself what you need for the season you are in.

Stage 1: Awakening

Awakening often starts with discomfort.

Something feels off, but you cannot quite explain why.

Your life may look good from the outside. You have the relationship, career, family, accomplishments, or faith community you were told would make you happy.

So why does it not feel the way you thought it would?

Awakening is when you begin looking at your life instead of simply moving through it.

You start asking:

Do I actually want this?

Do I believe this anymore?

If nobody else’s opinion mattered, would I still choose this?

Once you start seeing your life differently, it becomes difficult to unsee it.

This is often where women begin the work of overcoming good girl conditioning. You start noticing how many of your decisions were shaped by being agreeable, responsible, easy to love, and available to everyone else.

You may not know what needs to change yet.

You just know you cannot keep pretending everything feels fine.

You may be restless. Irritated. Exhausted. Curious. Emotional for reasons you cannot name.

You may find yourself questioning relationships, beliefs, career choices, family roles, or the version of success you spent years chasing.

You do not need a five year plan in this stage.

You need honesty.

Notice what feels heavy.

Notice what feels alive.

Notice what you have been trying not to admit.

Ask yourself:

What in my life no longer feels true for me?

Stage 2: Shedding

Eventually, awareness starts asking something of you.

Welcome to shedding.

This is where you begin releasing people, places, things, beliefs, identities, expectations, habits, and ways of thinking that no longer align with who you are becoming.

Sometimes shedding means leaving.

Sometimes it means deciding, “I am not doing that anymore.”

You may outgrow friendships. Change your relationship with family. Question spiritual beliefs. Stop participating in conversations that leave you feeling small. Set boundaries with people who benefited from your silence.

You may finally decide to stop people pleasing, even when people are disappointed.

And shedding can involve grief.

You can know something no longer belongs in your life and still miss it.

You can understand that a relationship has ended emotionally while still grieving the history, the plans, the family structure, and the woman you were when you entered it.

I will say this clearly… release does not always feel freeing at first.

Sometimes it feels lonely.

The old life is becoming too small, while the new one has not fully formed yet.

That in between space can make you question yourself. It can tempt you to go back simply because the familiar is easier to explain than the unknown.

Do not confuse familiarity with alignment.

You are allowed to change.

You are allowed to grieve.

You are allowed to choose yourself without building a courtroom case for why.

Ask yourself:

What am I holding onto because it is familiar, not because it still belongs?

Stage 3: Becoming

Becoming can be fun, awkward, exciting, and confusing all at once.

Because now you are experimenting.

You are asking:

Who am I when I am not performing who I have always been?

Maybe you change your hair or your wardrobe.

You travel alone.

Make new friends.

Date differently.

Try something you have always wanted to do.

Redesign your home.

Take yourself to dinner.

Start the business.

Leave the job.

Say yes to the invitation.

Say no without explaining yourself to death.

Becoming is not about creating a more impressive version of yourself.

It is about discovering what feels like you now.

You are figuring out how you want your relationships, work, home, body, faith, money, and life to feel.

This is also where an abundance mindset for women becomes important.

Abundance is not pretending everything is perfect. It is refusing to believe that your best years are behind you. It is remembering that there are more possibilities, more love, more creativity, more money, more joy, and more life available to you than the old version of you knew how to imagine.

You are not too old.

You are not too far gone.

You are not starting from zero.

You are starting with experience, wisdom, discernment, and a deeper understanding of what you will no longer tolerate.

Becoming requires space to experiment without demanding certainty from yourself.

You do not have to know exactly who you are becoming.

You get to discover her.

Trying something and changing your mind is not failure. It is exploration.

Ask yourself:

If I did not need anyone’s permission, what would I give myself permission to explore?

Stage 4: Embodiment

Embodiment is where you stop simply talking about the woman you want to be and start living as her.

This is grown ass woman energy.

You have boundaries.

You know what you want and what you do not.

You trust yourself.

You use your voice.

You make decisions based on your values instead of fear, guilt, or obligation.

You move to the beat of your own drum.

And you do not need everybody to understand you.

That does not mean you are never afraid. It does not mean you never question yourself. It does not mean you stop caring about the people you love.

Embodiment means fear and insecurity no longer get to run your life.

You say no without writing a five paragraph explanation.

You recover faster when someone disagrees with you.

You allow people to have their feelings without automatically making those feelings your responsibility.

Your calendar begins to reflect your priorities.

Your relationships begin to reflect your standards.

Your money begins to reflect your values.

Your outer life increasingly reflects your inner truth.

You are not performing freedom.

You are living it.

Embodiment is not a finish line. It is a practice.

You keep listening.

You keep choosing.

You keep honoring yourself.

You keep coming back when you drift into old patterns.

Freedom is not something you achieve once.

Freedom becomes a way of life.

Ask yourself:

Where am I ready to stop talking about the woman I want to be and start living as her?

Quote graphic reading “Freedom becomes a way of life.”

You Can Be in More Than One Stage at Once

This may be the most important thing to understand about personal transformation:

It is not linear.

You can be embodying grown ass woman energy in your career while awakening to something in your relationship.

You can have strong boundaries with friends while realizing you still become the good girl around your family.

You can be becoming in one area while shedding in another.

That does not mean you are going backward.

Transformation is not:

Awakening, then shedding, then becoming, then embodiment, then done.

There is no done.

As your relationship with yourself deepens, you notice sooner. You trust yourself faster. You become more willing to tell yourself the truth.

And you stop treating every change as evidence that something has gone wrong.

Sometimes change is evidence that you have grown.

Maybe You Do Not Need to Find Yourself

We talk a lot about finding yourself again, especially when you are starting over after 40.

But I do not know that you are actually missing.

You may simply be underneath years of expectations, responsibilities, conditioning, and roles you learned to perform.

The work is to listen.

To shed.

To explore.

To trust.

To choose.

You do not have to know exactly who you will be on the other side of this season.

You only need to become honest about where you are now.

So ask yourself:

Where am I in my Transformation Journey?

Awakening?

Shedding?

Becoming?

Embodiment?

Maybe you are somewhere between two. Maybe you are experiencing all four in different parts of your life.

That is okay.

Your job is not to rush through it.

Your job is to listen to what this version of you is asking for next.

For today, write this sentence and finish it honestly:

Freedom for me today looks like ________.

Do not overthink it.

Let the first true answer come.
